Transport to Site

BRinK-Volunteers will be arriving at the Hosea Kotako Internation Airport Windhoek. You will be picked up by transport organised by BRinK and drive to Kuzikus for about 2 1/2 hours. The camp site is located in the Kalahari veldt and Kuzikus lodge is about 2km away. On site we will be in contact via radio. On the day of arrival you will be made familiar with the area, establish in camp, and meet other research volunteers.
Food and Accomodation

All food and drink is provided. Poitji is a traditional Namibian dish - a big pot on the fire with vegetables, meat and potatoes boild for a few hours. Fruit and vegetables are organic, but need to be transported from Windhoek. Game and eggs come from the reserve itself, and you will see how well animals are kept. BRinK researchers share large tents (with mosquito doors) by two on the campsite. All tents are equipped with beds and matresses. Each tent has a bushshower and sink installed at the back end. Unlike many parts in Africa, drinking water on site is of high quality, being pumped up the ground via solar or wind.

Health

Namibia is a rather a dry country, so you will not need to worry about tropical diseases. Malaria is only prevalent in the northern regions of Namibia, however, generally not in the Kalahari. Vaccines that you personally require are: Polio, Tetanus and BCG (Tubercolosis), Meningitis (A & C), Typhoid, Hepatitis A & B and Rabies. Any specific vaccinations are not necessary. In case of emergency, the health service in Windhoek (2 1/2 hours drive) is comparable with European standards and Kuzikus is a member of MedRescue. A health and travel insurance is absolutely required for your stay in Namibia and we strongly recommend you to bring a credit card.

Language

The working language used on site is English. Local staff members speak English and Afrikaans, which is similar to Dutch.

Money

We strongly recommend you to bring a credit card in case of any emergency. You will not need much personal spending money on site, unless you plan a trip before or after your research in Kuzikus. You will be staying in Kuzikus for four-weeks continously. Kuzikus is far in the bush and the next larger town is no nearer than 100km. However, there is a store at Kuzikus lodge (walking distance), mainly for local staff to buy food and sweets.
Internet and Phone

No internet can be used in camp. Mobile phone connect
ion is rare, but possible on top of some windmills and trees. Please tell your friends and family that because of extremely remote nature of the site you will be hardly contactable. Yet, if a volunteer needs to be contacted in case of emergency, please advise your friends and family to send an email to BRinK or call the landline at the lodge.

Sun and Heat

During summer, it can get extremely hot (up to 35°C) in the Kalahari and Namibia is famous for its harsh sun (high level of ozone). Water will be always available and we will stop research work around 11am and rest until 3pm, depending on the work we have to do.

Safari throughout Namibia

Volunteers often regret not to have booked a safari throughout Namibia after their project in Kuzikus. To safe you from this we recommend you to travel with our partner Outdoor Adventure Namibia Safaris.  With them, you can be sure to have some adventure, as this is what they are specialised on. However, there are many safari companies in Namibia, that also offer shorter trips.
