We capture small mammal species with live-traps in order to gain insights into their demography patterns in the Kalahari. We investigate their habitat preferences and species composition in different areas. Small mammals are often used to study population structure, genetics and small scale demography, as they are easy to capture and identify in the wild. Trapping small mammals requires skills in handling them in a humane way. This may take early mornings and late nights, to minimise time of the animal in the traps. The field work with these creature often give rise to incredible situations in the nature, that otherwise would not be experienced.

The aim of the study is to capture and identify different species of micromammals and study their diversity and abundance in different parts of Kuzikus reserve. You will learn

- how to trap and handle life mammals using Sherman and Trip traps
- identify different species and mark them for re-capture rates
- vegetation surveys
