The research station is a simple tented camp situated within the Kalahari wilderness.
There are four large tents for living, each equipped with beds and storage boxes. Each tent has a bathroom installed at the back including a bushshower and sink. Hot water for showers is heated with solar showers or water is boiled on open fire and distributed to showers. Usually everyone fills up their shower in the morning to be heat up by the sun during the day.
Another two large army tents are placed under Camelthorn trees for dining, cooking and laboratory work.
Researchers cook and eat communally, and everyone has a go to try out new recipies. In the kitchen there is a stove and fridge. We also cook on open fires - traditional Namibian "poitji" and "braai".
As the camp area is unfenced, animals freely traverse the place including large antelopes that chew on the camelthornseeds by your tent and giraffes that come for drinking at the waterhole nearby. Water is pumped up the ground via solar. This water is also used for animal drinking, as there is a waterhole near camp. Perfect for animal observations!
Electricity is available via solar. The panel is connected to 12V car batteries which are connected to a converter to charge computers. The car battery needs to be connected to the solar panel all day to ensure enough power for computers. If the battery remains flat, it is brought to the lodge and charged over there. Alternatively electricals can be charged at the lodge. The research camp is isolated and in an remote area. Mobile phone connection is available from some trees only. Internet is available at the lodge only. Independent researchers use the office at the lodge for computing work.
