The research station is a simple tented camp situated within the Kalahari wilderness. We live simple, under the stars within the African bush.
As the camp area is unfenced, animals freely traverse the place including large antelopes that chew on the camelseeds by your tent and Giraffes that come for drinking at the waterhole nearby.
In total there are four large tents for living, each equipped with beds, wardrobes and storage boxes. Each tent has a bathroom installed at the back including a bushshower and sink.
There are another two large tents for dining and cooking and computing and lab work, placed under large camelthorn trees.
Researchers cook and eat communally, and everyone has a go to try out new recipies. In the kitchen there is a stove and fridge. We also cook on open fires in traditional Namibian "poiki pots"
Water is pumped up the ground via solar. This water is also used for animal drinking, as there is a waterhole near camp. Perfect for animal observations!
Hot water for showers is heated with solar showers or water is boiled on open fire and distributed to showers. Usually everyone fills up their shower in the morning to be heat up by the sun during the day.
Electricity is only available via a small solar panel. The panel is connect to 12V car batteries which are connected to a converter to charger computers for data analysis. The car battery needs to be connected to the solar panel all day to ensure enough power for computers. If the battery remains flat, it is brought to the lodge and charged over there.
The research camp is isolated and in an remote area. We will be living in the wild, however, as public awareness is an important part of our work we get in contact with different kinds of people.
Presentations will be held by the lodge, where we can also watch DVDs in the evenings and have some drinks together. |
