Bird distribution, abundance and their song in Kuzikus Wildlife Reserve

So far BRinK recorded over 130 bird species in Kuzikus Wildlife Reserve. The diversity ranges from tiny passerines to endangered vultures to the large ostrich. Many migratory birds overwinter in Kuzikus. We would like to expand our species list, especially focusing on night active species using play back.

Recording the song of a bird is useful to learn and be able to identify a species by their call. We use specialised sound recording equipment. Behavioural pilot studies can be made to map song with behaviour of breeding species.

Walking transects using the distance sampling technique enables us to obtain an abundance estimate of birds.  With this we also record habitat preferences of bird species. The study is part of long-term monitoring of birds.

The study is carried out in Kuzikus wildlife reserve. There might be good chances to do an excursion expedition on a nearby cattle farm to do start an inventory on bird species.
Propose your methods on song recording, behaviour and distance sampling!
